Going Camping? Try These Delicious Campfire Recipes

Whenever camping comes up in a conversation, my inner child immediately takes the wheel. 

Camping? I love camping. What’s your favorite camping spot? Oh, Big Bear? I actually have a list of camping essentials saved on my phone; you want me to airdrop it to you? We’re definitely planning a trip sometime next week; my family’s been taking camping trips every month since I was nine.

Did I mention I love camping? 

No, I am not ashamed to admit I have a problem. Even my partner, who’s a sucker for adventure, thinks I’m a lunatic when it comes to camping trips. In reality, it’s camping that brings keeps me grounded and reminds me to slow down and enjoy everything in the now. The pine trees smell, the dirt underneath my bare feet, a refreshing dip in the lake, fishing (trying, at least), and the most spectacular part of any camping trip-a sky so overflowing with stars that you feel your body leaving your soul. 

It’s all enlightening, but let’s move on to what this article’s about: your stomach. Campfire recipes are so simple, so satisfying, and so worth the effort. Trust me, folks, it doesn’t end at s’ mores. You can create a buffet table with the number of things you can make over a campfire.

Campfire Breakfast Burger

Before we dive into this scrumptious recipe, know that Emily at Jelly Toast has a black pepper biscuit recipe that perfectly complements this burger. It’s a dry mix, and you add water when it’s ready to make. It’s a beautiful camping hack instead of buying biscuits and having them go dry on the way. 

All you’ll need is a cast iron pan, water/cheddar cheese (if you choose to make the biscuits according to her blog), twelve sausage patties, and a dozen eggs. You can use egg rings to cook your biscuits and eggs, so you achieve similar sizes. Cook the sausage patties over medium heat until brown and toasted and top everything together. I personally add a slice of American cheddar cheese because why not? Add your choice of condiment and boom, best breakfast sandwich ever.

I know what you’re thinking…another breakfast recipe? Trust me; it’s not because “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” No, it’s because breakfast meals are the best meals. There is no arguing here, so let’s get to it. 

You can indeed buy your pancake mix anywhere, but why not give yourself the benefit of the doubt, make it at home, and receive endless praise on how amazing it is? This dry mix consists of only five ingredients and can be prepared in under five minutes. You throw the ingredients in a large mason jar, add water, throw on that skillet pan,  smother in hot maple syrup, serve with some sizzling turkey bacon, and devour

I know I don’t have to tell you this because you’re a functioning human, but you brought coffee, right?

Snack. In no known universe would I ever consider this a lunch or dinner- it is a snack. Now that I’ve got that off my chest let’s talk about the simplicity of this recipe. 

You bring a package of fries along, cover the tin foil with cooking spray, and toss them on the grill of your campfire. The time depends on package instructions. When fully cooked, pour a can of chili, and cover (and I do mean cover) the top with your cheese choice. Return to the fire until cheese is melted and ta-da! Chili cheese fries without the mess. Seriously, you chow down and take a nap. 

Marinated Chicken and Onion Kebabs

No headache here, I promise. The marinade is a shortlist, so you can even marinate it the night before you leave. While onions are the only vegetables stated, feel free your own choice of vegetables or fruits on separate skewers. Skewered chicken is one of the most leisurely meals to prepare over a campfire, and it’s always something everyone can agree on. For sides, you can use rice, tortillas, and even add it to a salad if you’re feeling adventurous. The tzatziki sauce is a must, so please don’t leave it out.

Taste and Tell 

Ladies and gentlemen, the moment we’ve all been waiting for for…dessert. While camping is all about indulging and enjoying yourself and skinny dipping after the kids fall asleep…I forgot where I was going with this. 

We’ve got to squeeze in something healthy here- for the sake of the children, of course. This dessert is simplicity in physical form and thoroughly mouthwatering. It’s so easy to make and delicious that you think to yourself: how have I never thought of this before? I know it’s not camping without s’mores, so feel free to add some mini marshmallow to this skillet and let your tastebuds fly.
